Power Over Pain:
People Working Together to Improve Pain Management in Their Communities

The American Pain Foundation has implemented a grassroots action-oriented public awareness campaign called the Power Over Pain Campaign.

The goals of Power Over Pain are to:

  • Make effective pain management a health care priority at the state and local levels
  • Provide the public with practical information about pain and its management
  • Empower patients and families to demand effective pain control
  • Encourage health care professionals to become better informed about pain and its management

Many people with pain do not know they have the right to have their pain assessed and treated, and that their pain can be relieved or greatly eased with proper pain management. Pain sufferers are often embarrassed to speak up and let their health care provider know they are in pain. Moreover, many people are misinformed about pain medications.

The Missouri Pain Initiative has organized a statewide speaker’s bureau of trained volunteers available to present to state and local organizations, libraries, or community groups at no charge. The presentations help people with pain and their caregivers better understand their pain, ways to describe it to healthcare professionals, ways to treat it, and how to find help.
