Disclaimer

The Missouri Pain Initiative has compiled a voluntary list of pain care professionals. This listing does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation. The Missouri Pain Initiative cannot assume any responsibility for its accuracy or the actions of any listed facility or pain professional.

As a self-advocate it’s up to you to determine who has the skills and appropriate treatments to address your pain. You are highly encouraged to independently investigate the facilities listed in this directory before selecting any provider.

Call the pain professional’s office and talk with the office manager or nurse at the practice. Begin by saying that you are looking for a doctor who can treat your pain. Describe your pain briefly. Some questions to ask:

  1. Does the doctor (or other pain professional) treat my type of pain?
  2. Is he or she accepting new patients?
  3. How long will I wait for an appointment?
  4. What types of treatments are used to treat my pain (medications and other therapies)?
  5. Has he or she treated others with my type of pain?
  6. What’s the most recent pain education they have received?

You can also ask the pain professional’s office to supply the pain professionals credentials regarding education, training, and experience in pain management.

Other ways to find someone to treaty your pain:

  1. Start by asking your current provider to refer you to a specialist with expertise in treating your particular problem.
  2. Check with your health insurance provider to see if there are any pain specialists or clinics in your plan.
  3. Call the referral service of the largest hospital in your area.
  4. Ask family, friends, or co-workers who’ve had pain for suggestions.
  5. Call your local hospice. They can be helpful in finding a pain specialist even for non end-of-of-life care.
  6. Check with professional health care provider organizations that may also have directory listing, such as:
