Missouri Pain Initiative, pain partners to promote pain relief
Kansas City, MO - The Missouri Pain
Initiative (MOPI) today announced it will support Governor
Matt Blunt’s proclamation
of September as Pain Awareness Month by joining forces
with community organizations
throughout the state in a effort to bring awareness to
the problem of inadequately treated pain. The Changing the
Face
of Pain collaborative
will kick-off a number of activities scheduled for the
month of September.
"Pain is a hidden epidemic in Missouri
that robs one in four people of enjoyment of life. Pain, in all
of its forms, is a huge problem
whether you live in the city or the country. The National
Institute of Health estimates that pain costs the U.S. economy
$100 billion
every year due to the expense of illness and having
to be away from work.” said Clara Applegate, MD, president
of the Missouri Pain Initiative and a neurologist specializing
in Pain
Management at Ozarks Medical Center. “But there
is hope, with treatment.” This is the message
the collaborative hopes to spread during September.
Experienced health care professionals
and pain management experts with MOPI will be making community
presentations
and providing
free information to answer questions about pain management.
Members of the Changing the Face of Pain collaborative
will join MOPI
for a day at the state capital September 13th helping
our elected officials better understand the problems
facing
pain sufferers.
