Missouri Pain Initiative Executive Director Receives
State Pain Initiative Champion Award
Ann J. Corley, MS, Executive Director of the
Missouri Pain Initiative was presented with the State Pain Initiative
Champion Award at
the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives Conference held in Boston
June 21-23, 2007. Ms. Corley was recognized for her contributions
in helping the Missouri Pain Initiative expand its programming
and outreach. The Missouri Pain Initiative is considered one of
the model state pain initiative programs for the country and the
award reflects that. In 2006, Chris Herndon, PharmD, past president
of the Missouri Pain Initiative, was honored as State Pain Initiative
Champion.
American Society for Pain Management Nurses presents the Clinical
Practice Award to MOPI Member
In recognition of demonstrated excellence in pain management nursing
clinical American Society for Pain Management Nurses (ASPMN) presented
their Clinical Practice Award practice to MOPI member Dorothy Stratman-Lucey
RN, MSN, BC, PNP at their 2007 National Conference. Dorothy works
on the pain management team at Shriner’s Hospital in St.
Louis is also active in the American Nurses Association and the
St. Louis chapter of ASPMN. The St. Louis Regional Chapter was
also awarded the Chapter Award for all of their efforts in promoting
improved pain management consumer and professional education, involvement
in pain initiatives, and political advocacy. Congratulations to
Dorothy and ASPMN St. Louis!
MOPI
Member appointed to the Board of Directors for the Alliance of
State Pain Initiatives
Chris M. Herndon, PharmD, BCPS, Assistant Professor,
School of Pharmacy at Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville
was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Alliance
of State Pain Initiatives (ASPI). ASPI is umbrella network of state-based
Pain Initiative organizations, of which MOPI is a member. Dr. Herndon
was instrumental in launching the Missouri Pain Initiative in late
2003 and served as Past-President, Immediate Past-President, and
Treasurer. He remains an active member – congratulations
Dr. Herndon!

Pain Awareness Month a
Success
Statewide efforts to raise
awareness of the undertreatment of pain were
in full swing during National Pain Awareness
Month.
The Missouri Pain Initiative
and other pain partners held over 20 community
presentations and
disseminated pain education
materials through a number of avenues including
outpatient clinics, Meals on Wheels, public
libraries. Various pain experts were featured
in print, radio and television.
Pain advocates converged
on the State Capital on September 13 for
Pain Advocacy Day making visits to elected
officials and offering free pain information.
Advocates also attending the Governor’s
Proclamation signing ceremony declaring September
Pain Awareness Month in Missouri.

Professional education conference
Tan-Tar-A was the site for a professional education conference
featuring regional and national experts in the field of
pain management. The conference was held September 15-16
and co-hosted by the Missouri Pain Initiative and the St.
Louis and Kansas City Chapters of the American Society
for Pain Management Nursing.
